Pure Fibre (MPO) vs. Hybrid (AOC) HDMI Cables
The main differences between Pure Fibre (MPO) and Hybrid (AOC) HDMI cables are the type of connector and the performance:
Connector & Cable Design
- AOC (Active Optical Cable) HDMI cables use a proprietary hybrid copper/fibre cable with fixed HDMI heads.
- MPO cables are industry-standard, widely used in high-end networks, and available from multiple suppliers.
- MPO connectors bundle multiple fibres into a compact plug using Multi-Fibre Push-On (MPO) technology.
- The MPO connector features a spring-loaded latch that securely clicks into place.
Performance
- MPO technology supports higher bandwidths and faster data transfer rates, making it ideal for 8K, 10K, and future resolutions.
- All HDMI functions (including ARC and CEC) work up to 300m over MPO cables.
- AOC HDMI fibre optic cables may have bandwidth limitations:
- Video signals work up to 100m.
- ARC and CEC, which rely on copper cores, may fail beyond 30m.
Installation Flexibility
- MPO systems allow direction changes by swapping MPO-to-HDMI adapters.
- AOC cables are directional—they function only in one direction and cannot be changed after installation.
Future-Proofing
- MPO technology is better equipped for future HDMI standards, supporting higher bandwidths.
- MPO OM3 multimode fibre can theoretically support HDMI 2.2 (96Gbps) over 100m.
Maintenance & Reliability
- In MPO systems, failed MPO-to-HDMI adapters can be replaced separately, reducing costs.
- With AOC cables, if the connector fails, the entire cable must be replaced.
Conclusion
MPO technology offers a more powerful, flexible, and future-proof solution for HDMI transmissions over fibre optic cable compared to Hybrid (AOC) HDMI cables.
For 8K resolutions copper cables are limited to approximately 5 metres, whereas pure fiber MPO cables can extend up to 300 metres making them the superior choice for long-distance transmission.
